Footwear for Diabetic Patients

Diabetes is a multi systemic disease. It affects the nervous system in a characteristic way. It reduces the functions of nerves (Neuropathy) especially those of lower limbs. Therefore, patients lose protective pain sensation of the foot and leg. All these changes make the foot prone to injury. The way to avoid injury, which can lead to gangrene and possible loss of limb, is to protect the foot and leg by using the proper type of footwear. A diabetic patient must never walk barefoot.

The AKD department was opened in 1974 with two Artificial Haemodialysis Machines, and 3 additional machines added in 1978. CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis) commenced for haemodynamically unstable patients in 1990. The Reverse Osmosis plant for the complete purification of dialysate fluid was installed in 2002. One dialysis machine was installed in ICU. The department also has CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Treatment) therapy machines (BM 25 Baxter) for bedside dialysis by CVVHD (continuous venovenous haemodiafiltration) for critically serious ICU patients who are on ventilators with fluid overload and hypotension.

The department has state-of-the-art equipment for conducting electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) tests. We conduct Video EEG, EMG, nerve conduction studies, evoked potential studies, including V.E.P., B.A.E.R. and the P300 latency study. The department will shortly be starting sleep studies

We perform interventional radiological procedures where aneurysms and AV malfunctions are being treated by coiling and embolization in the Cathlab by our Neuro-Radiologists. Patients have successfully undergone these procedures, and have made a remarkable recovery without requiring surgery on the brain. Another non-invasive procedure being performed at the Hospital is the Neuro Endoscopy, where tumours can be removed, and shunts placed in the ventricles, using endoscopes.

Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics is a highly reputed tertiary referral centre for the management of all types of high-risk pregnancies and obstetrics emergencies. These include

It is much like snugly fitting stocking on a delicate leg, high dose of radiation enveloping tumour. The advantage for the patients would be to reduce acute and late toxicities while enhancing chances of cure.

Most pregnancies end in the birth of a child who is normal healthy and with, a good quality of life. However, about 3% of pregnancies result in the birth of children with abnormalities.It is the constant endeavour of those in the medical profession who are charged with the responsibility of caring for pregnant women, to look for clues, which might suggest that the foetus might be at risk for a serious medical disorder. About 20 years ago even if such a suspicion was raised doctors could do very little to prove or disprove their doubts. They therfore had very little evidence to advise the parents in a meaningful way.

Rheumatology is largely a clinical speciality, requiring the help of the laboratory, X-rays, and at times other radio imaging modalities like CT and MRI (which the hospital possesses). Most rheumatic disorders are associated with pain and swelling of joints. At times various organs of the body may be affected.

The department of Urology is doing considerable work in conjunction of Gynaecology, in the area of male infertility, and the Hospital plans to open a special clinic for male infertility in the near future. The department carries out all operative surgical procedures and endoscopic procedures like TUR, URS, PCN, PCNL.

Osteoporosis has been called the silent epidemic. It progresses without pain or symptoms of any kind and is often only diagnosed when a fracture occurs. Yet it is a disease that can be prevented and treated and must not be considered a normal or inevitable part of aging. The Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital Osteoporotic and Obesity Assessment Centre has installed the DPX-MD, the high tech, state of the art Bone Densitometry System from LUNAR. For the very first time in India, whole body densitometry will be possible together with fat assessment.

The laboratory has recently added few specialized tests. Tests like HIV, HbsAg, HCV are done daily by microwell ELISA, while more specific tests like tumour markers for instance, total and free PSA, and AFP are done in batches. Tests like IgG and IgM for TB, IgG for ANA, Ferritin, WESTERN BLOT HIV etc are also done in batches. Test like Ig M Leptospira , IgM and IgG for Dengue and HAV IgM have a good workload during the seasons, are also carried out throughout the year. Microbiological testing of bacterial cultures, fungal cultures etc. is carried out taking utmost precautions by handling the samples carefully and preventing contamination of the samples. Sub-cultures and biochemical tests for identification of organisms is also done in microbiology department. As patients are not responding well to the treatment for infection by acid-fast bacilli, we have started culturing AFB with Anti-TB drugs.

The state-of-the-art PET CT machine is installed at our hospital. The device is the Siemens Biograph molecular CT with a cardiac capable 64 slice CT machine based on rare earth PET detectors. Keeping with our commitment to provide medical care with focus on quality, assurance of health and best proven technology with human approach, the PET CT Centre allows use of the device with applications in Oncology, Neurology, Cardiology, PUO (pyrexia of unknown origin) as well as the evaluation of orthopedic implant infection.

FIBER–OPTIC VIDEO BRONCHOSCOPY: The most comprehensive latest and finest video bronchofiberscope system of Olympus (Japan) has been added to the diagnostics of our department. The Fiber–Optic Scopy is of prime diagnostic importance in cases of lung cancer, tuberculosis, hemoptysis, and intrabronchial lesions. We can directly visualise the lesion and videotape the whole procedure for review, or we can take still pictures of the lesion with a specialised camera. Fiber-Optic Scopy can also be done on an outdoor basis. We are conducting intracutaneous and intradermal (prick) Allergy Testing with different allergens including Pollens, Fungi, Dusts, Insects, Foods and Danders etc

This technology will serve to consistently provide high-quality digital X-rays. Another attractive feature of this unit will be the recording of full spine and full lower limb radiography, on a single film. This technology, accompanied by our newly acquired high-end image intensifier equipped X-ray machines, will ensure a consistent quality of service. The department also has the latest portable machines for taking digital X-rays in the wards.
